Sonic Boom

WASHINGTON D.C.
DURATION 27: 21

In Sonic Boom, Pinder initiated a spiritual journey that ended up in the very location where it began. The Walter Reed Army Medical Center (1909-2011) treated active and veteran military members, among others, through the wars of the 20th century in Washington, DC. In front of the decommissioned hospital, the artist wheeled a 1970s muscle car, purchased from a local military veteran, accompanied by a local brass band playing a New Orleans-style dirge. The pit crew elevated the car on jack stands and removed its wheels, before Pinder entered and accelerated the stripped vehicle to its limit. Spectators watched as flames threatened to end the work prematurely. The crew rolled the car’s wheels back to where the procession began, while the band continued to play.
