Spinnin
Digital Video – 2006
The bicycle is arguably one of the most brilliant mechanical inventions created by man. The recent phenomena of a fitness conscious individuals sitting on a stationary bike and aggressively (and sometimes passionately) going nowhere, sparks my interest. Even though I consider this futile act to be a past time for the well-to-do, I also think of spinning as a poetic metaphor of spiritual and emotional progress that physically goes nowhere.
Spinning is a general commentary on racial mobility. Is it possible for a person to be static and dynamic at the same time? For many African Americans the lack of forward momentum is a grim reality. With Spinning, I am both still and in motion. Taking inspiration Futurist stylization, the imagery is focused continuity in a stationary location.
